8. Shop to Save Tropical Rainforests
-- part contents for background part 6
----- text -----
The sad fact of most rainforest destruction is that many countries,
under the burden of debt, feel they need to "develop and exploit"
remote rainforest areas to earn export dollars just to pay interest
on foreign loans. (See the forest/tropical rainforest section
for more details.)
One way we can slow forest destruction is by not buying products
that result from the "slash and burn" land management style.
Instead buy rainforest products that result from sustainable
management of the natural forest areas, such as brazil nuts and
natural latex rubber.
Destructive rainforest products to avoid:
- Imported beef, since about 2/3 of the forested land is cleared
for short-term cattle ranching.
- Tropical hardwood products - plywood and furniture - made from
rosewood, teak, and mahogany. Instead buy ash, bamboo, cedar,
or pine products.
Contact the Rainforest Action Network for more information. ***
